#AbstractObsession

#AbstractObsession (#AO).

“Abstract art is not the creation of another reality but the true vision of reality.” —Piet Mondrian.

Taking pictures of abstracts is an intuitive, emotional, spontaneous act which is a natural part of my daily strolls. Two common activities intertwined. It is a means of meditation, a way to get to a certain state of mind. FINDING BEAUTY IN THE ORDINARY.

An abstract photo or finding it, is like entering a parallel world or dimension. People today do not have time to stop, look at things and really pay attention to detail. To feel joy from a simple and ordinary thing, like an old tree branch or a leaf that falls onto the street or a puddle. #AO is an invitation to slow down, take a pause and look around. When abstracting the mind from the rational lens, you can truly capture beauty hidden anywhere.
My abstract imagery is taken from fragments of tiny details like zebra crossings, commercial signs, torn posters, cement geometry, worn out walls, lines that divide facades, tire cracks, bird droppings, street brush strokes or bricks corroded by time.

When I was younger I did not consider myself a good illustrator, but then I discovered the work of abstract painters & sculptors, such as Tápies, Le Parc, Calder, Mondrian, Siskind, Miro, Rothko, Kandinsky, Ródchenko (Russian Constructivist), Pollock & Krasner, etc, which fuelled my obsession for the abstract. I spent a lot of hours in museums admiring them, impressed by the monumental size of their work and an aesthetic end in itself.  The orderly geometry and vibrant, contrasting colors. Mere synthesis, simplicity and aesthetic.

One thing that I really love about abstracts is that everyone can see something unique and create their own story. There is no right or wrong. Some find shapes or objects others do not, some just feel impressed by the colors, lines and geometric signals. Each piece speaks to each individual differently.

In a saturated and absorbing hectic life, #AO invites us to reflect on the importance of stopping, taking a minute, and observing the details daily life offers as an act of rebellion.
